Preslav Nakov is the Professor and Department Chair of Natural Language Processing at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. His scholarly pursuits encompass a wide array of interests within the realm of natural language processing, with a particular focus on disinformation and false information detection, media bias identification, fact-checking, machine translation, biomedical text processing, and related domains.
Throughout his career, Nakov has held numerous positions. He contributed to the research endeavors at the Qatar Computing Research Institute and Hamad Bin Khalifa University. Prior to these roles, he served as a research fellow at the National University of Singapore, a researcher at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and an honorary lecturer at Sofia University in Bulgaria. Additionally, he has actively participated in program committees for prominent conferences in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence, notably serving as the program committee chair for the Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL 2022).
Recognized as a trailblazer in combating fake news and disinformation, Nakov has endeavored to disseminate his expertise through various channels. He authored a book titled “Semantic Relationships between Nominals,” along with two other volumes on computer algorithms and dozens of research papers elucidating strategies to address the challenges posed by misinformation on the internet. His scholarly contributions have been featured in over 100 media platforms and journals, including MIT Technology Review, Communications of the ACM, Forbes, and The Boston Globe, among others.
Nakov hails from Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California and a Master's Degree in the same discipline from Sofia University. Notably, he stands as the inaugural recipient of the prestigious John Atanasov Award bestowed by the Bulgarian President.
